DHL to trial first hybrid vehicles in the UK

Daimler's Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid Vehicles to reduce carbon emissions and fuel consumption

DHL has announced the trial of two Daimler hybrid vehicles in its Express and Logistics operations in the UK. Two Mitsubishi Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid vehicles will be trialed as part of the company's wider commitment to reducing its impact on the environment in line with the goals of its parent company Deutsche Post World Net. The vehicle trials were announced during the World Mobility Forum in Stuttgart on 29 January, 2008 when Andreas Renschler, member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Daimler Trucks, handed over the first vehicle for use in the UK as well as the first Mercedes-Benz Atego BlueTec Hybrid for use in Germany to Christian Stiefelhagen, Member of the MAIL Divisional Board, DPWN.

According to John Finn, Fleet Director DHL: "This initiative reinforces DHL's commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its business operations. By using new technology and innovation we are demonstrating the important steps we are taking in the fight against climate change."

Daimler AG and DHL anticipate that the two 7.5 ton vehicles, which run on hybrid diesel-electric engines, will use up to 20% less fuel than conventional gasoline or diesel vehicles and will also lead to a reduction in each vehicle's CO2 emissions.

Andreas Renschler of Daimler AG said: "Today, Daimler is the global market leader in commercial vehicles with a hybrid drive. Our 'Shaping Future Transportation' initiative for a cleaner environment shows that we take our responsibility towards our customers and the environment very seriously. We are delighted to be able to provide DHL with Europe's first Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid truck to use in its postal operations."

Deutsche Post World Net, the world's leading logistics services provider, is currently working on a comprehensive climate protection program for the entire Group. One point of focus is the use of alternative drives, such as electric, gas and hybrid engines. "We aspire to challenge thinking and drive change throughout the entire sector with our environmentally friendly projects," explained Finn.
